Australia Day 2019 celebrated a classic (car) way

A big congratulations to the Bayside Vehicle Restorers Club for a fantastic Australia Day celebrations on Saturday 26 January. I am not sure of the actual count, but there would have been hundreds of beautiful cars that filled the Ormiston State School school ground.

The day started from 6 am, with set up and arrival of the first cars. I managed to arrive at 7am, which is pretty good for me, as I am not a morning person. My 1800 travelled well and in the cool of the morning, the car ran at about 82 degrees Celsius on the trip over. However, during the 5 minute wait in the que to enter the school grounds with many other cars, the car’s tempertuare quickly rose to 90.

Cars were well directed by the Bayside club members in rows, allowing everyone attending to easily see all around each car. Every vehicle entering the ground was given a free Aussie flag to display proudly for the day. Many vehicles, including my 1800, already had Aussie flags attached. The main school ground was filled quickly and spilled over to the other side of the tree line. In additon to the the great effort by the Bayside Vehicle Restorers Club, the day was supported by the Redland City Council and the RACQ. There was also a raffle conducted, which supported Sailability and other charities.

A free breakfast was on offer for all those attending - I certainly enjoyed my sausage with onion and bacon on a long bun (thanks Annetta)! There was also tea and coffee supplied and the club provided a stall where you could purchase drinks. This was convenient, as it was a very hot day, needing good hydration and plenty of sun screen. Most gathered in groups under the shade of trees or in shade provided by the school buildings.

The raffle was drawn at 10.15 am with many prizes (none of my tickets were lucky ones) and the proceedings concluded at 10.30 am. However, that was not the end of the day, there was the option of participating in one of many rally runs throughout the Redlands, meeting up at the Redlands Sporting Club for a paid buffet lunch.

Everyone left as orderly as they arrived to enjoy the rest of Australia Day and the long weekend. We look forward to the Bayside club’s next event, their Swap Meet on Sunday, 31 March 2019, again at Ormiston State School (Gates open at 6 am; entry $5, swap sites from $10).
